Nadine Surjik was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, but primarily grew up in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, where she was fortunate enough to be surrounded by extended family. Her interest in art was ignited by her close relationship with her maternal grandmother who taught her the tradition and art of Ukrainian cross stitch and Ukrainian Easter eggs. She was also fortunate to have studied painting at the University of Saskatchewan under Robert Christie, who greatly expanded the use of her tools and her vision.
Since university, Nadine has had a one person show at the Godfrey Dean Cultural Centre, has shown her work at Langenburg’s nationally acclaimed Conversations Cafe, and had a piece utilized as a backdrop in the world premiere of the play Landscapes of the Dead in Vancouver. In 2018, Nadine’s painting “Brad’s Daisys” received the Special Merit Award at the LightSpaceTime Botanical Art Exhibition.
Both of Nadine’s grandmothers were great lovers of gardens, nature and the beauty therewithin. It is here where Nadine primarily devotes her painting skill. It is the exploration of her subject and the magnificence of the colours that engages and sustains both the artist and the observer.
Currently, Nadine resides with her husband of 25 years on an acreage near Yorkton with their family of assorted rescue cats, dogs and llamas, feeling very grateful in her life. She continues to paint. Nadine is available for commission work and can be contacted by email.
